A History

From: Bruce Gingrich
THE NAME GINGRICH
The family name Gingrich has variously appeared in the official documents as,Kingry, Kinrich, Kingerich, Kindrick, Gingerich, and Gingrich. The earliest writing of it by the English scribe is Kingry. The earliest writing of the name by a member of the family, that of John a son of, and an administrator of the estate of Yost (Joseph) is Gingrich. This as in the case of all early signatures of members of the family is written in German.
One would expect to find the name listed among the early Swiss and German immigrants, but such is not the case. The only explanation is that there are similar instances. Searching all the available records of Lancaster County, we do not find the name along the lists of the earliest settlers. I mention Lancaster County because it must be remembered that all of what are now Dauphin and Lebanon counties was all Lancaster County prior to 1785. Lebanon County was formed out of Dauphin County in 1813. Not all captains of ships carrying immigrants to America kept a list of the names of their passengers, but all were required to do so after 1730.
Three Gingrichs settled in what is now Lebanon county, namely:
(1) YOST (Joseph) our ancestor, who married Anna Huber, and their eight children were:

(2) MICHAEL married Magdalena Folk, and their seven children were:

(3) PETER (no record of his wife). His ten children were:

I am researching the descendants of Christian Gingrich (b. 1745). I do not believe the John you (Barbara Rivas) ask about is his child. He is buried in Dauphin County I do have some information on Michael Gingrich (2). I have not researched this but was given to me. The dates are limited but there is a possibility you would be with this clan. If you think this could be a possibility, I can send you more information on this family (snail mail). The way I have it formatted doesn't work well on e-mail.

I don't know anyone who has researched this family. Most of the informtion I have is because of Gingrich/Gingrich marriages which cross over into my line. Let me know what you think.

RE: Barbara Rivas:

I have a lot of information on the Gingerich's in Missouri. *John S. went to Lawrence, Kansas as a circuit preacher. He was under the elder, S. Snyder, who was killed in Quantrill's raid on Lawrence. John S. also helped establish a church in Fulton, Callaway Co., MO., where most of his kinfolks settled. John S had 4 children.
There is a man living in Richfield, PA. who is a descendent of William Gingerich (brother to my John S.). William seems to be the only one who stayed home in Juniata Co. This gentleman has a family bible. It is not the original Gingerich bible, but one that William or someone made. His name is Noah L. Zimmerman, R#1 Box 602 Richfield, PA 17086-9709

I have a whole slew of wills and papers from Mifflintown.. I was there several summers ago and just copied everything that had to do with Gingerich. I also got a will from Lewistown on an Elizabeth Gingerich who died in 1825 (more or less). On the inventory and sale papers of my John Gingerich's estate, the name is spelled about 5 different ways be the brothers themselves. I did find his gravestone though (pretty sure- the dates match perfectly) and his wife. His was in Mexico and her's across in Perry Co., Saville Twp.

CIIISIII Note: We Recently determined that John b. 1791 is the brother to my Elizabeth b. 1797

Son: David GINGERY b. 28 Feb 1828 d. 6 Apr 1914, m.Catherine FISHER b.10 Dec1830 d. 11 May1899.
Civil War Veteran: 184th Regt., PA Vol. Inf. Co. E. PVT Entered the service - Union - May 12, 1864 - Discharged: April 8, 1865. Note: David was shot in his left forearm on 8 Jun 1864 and it was cut off at the elbow, and the census mentions that it is missing.
David and Catherine attended Sunday school Tylersville Class of the Albright Evangelical Church in Clinton County in 1874 and the last name was spelled GINGERICK. It changed to GINGERY later.
The 1880 Clinton County PA census shows that the whole family was born in Pennsylvania. I remember the genealogy librarian at our local library commented that she found that interesting. We found out another tidbit that David's father was John, and he took off when David was about six. Several people that have contacted us have said they are stuck and cannot find out much past this time.

Re: GINGRICH: Before I begin my query, I have a copy of the bible entries ofthe births of the 15 children of Daniel SCHRAG & Elizabeth GINGRICH, Amish Mennonites of Perth Co., ON. If anyone is interested, I'll send over the transcription. Elizabeth was b. in 1825 on the Atlantic Ocean, so she may be the daughter of Jacob GINGERICH & Veronica LITWILLER, who emigrated to Canada in 1825.
Jonathan GINGRICH and Joseph GINGRICH of Lancaster (later Adams Co.) signed as witnesses to Daniel STAUFFER's will dated Aug 6, 1796 and proved Oct 1, 1803.
Would anyone know the relationship of the GINGRICHs to the STAUFFERS?
