William H. H. Bumgardner, Corporal, b. 22 Oct 1841 d. 12 July
1864 from wounds suffered in action with Mosby's Guerrillas at Mount Zion
Church 6 July, 1864. He is buried at Arlington National Cemetery in section
13.2, grave 7800.
William enlisted in the 2nd Mass Cav, Co. A, which was raised in San Francisco.
During the Civil War the Union units raised in California were all used to
replace regular army units in the west, which then went east to fight in
the 'real' war. Most of those living in California were of course from other
states, and there were many who wanted to get into the 'real'fight with
the south, not chase Indians, etc. in the west. Many went back east to enlist,
but a deal was made with state officials in Massachusetts, which was having
difficulty in raising the number of troops is was supposed to, to use the
enlistment bounty to pay the transportation costs for first one company,
and ultimately five total companies of cavalry which would serve in the east.
Thus the only organized group of men from California who served in the east
were the California Battalion of the 2nd Mass Cavalry.
