FOREWARD by Mr. Davis:

When I first began genealogical research on my Mennonite ancestors in 1983 I discovered that almost all the books written on Mennonite families in America commenced with the American immigrant ancestor. ŹIt appeared that very little was known of the immigrant ancestor's roots other than most were of Swiss ancestry. It was almost as if there was a dark veil separating this immigrant from his family roots in Europe. After several years of fumbling around in the dark I was amazed at how much information there really was in the various archives in Switzerland on these Mennonite immigrants. Some of this information made it's way to America.

This book is a result of several trips to Switzerland, Germany and Pennsylvania, gathering information on Anabaptist families who lived in these places. The majority of my research took place in the archives in Bern, Switzerland. Most of the Canton Bern church books have been deposited there. In some cases such as the church books of the parish of Oberdiessbach, it was necessary for me to travel to the village of Oberdiessbach and look at the records there.
