Questions of where to look?
Langnau in Switzerland is the earliest point and a farm of Dursrutti which was apparently confiscated because of their religious views. They were forced to move from one place to another.
In coming to America two brothers came prior to 1717 (Peter and Johans) and are not on the shipping lists that followed. The younger brother Christian ( who was at the Battle of the Meadows.) appears on later shipping lists. I believe I have a note on this in the index. This has caused a lot of confusion with searchers trying to connect things up.
Timeline
1100: The use of surnames begin in this century. ( Encyclopedia
Britannica.) The name Baumgartner derived from the marriage of two families
Baum and Gardt. (The Encyclopedia of European Surnames.) The practice was
that the wife attached her name hyphenated first. Further this source indicates
that the Baumgartners were known as judges and glass makers.
*Note: The practice of contraction of the -t- and -n- I believe that -gardt
and -garten- may have been used interchangeably as nouns at this
early date and that -garten- was the verb -To garden- or -to guard.- The
-n- may have been language accrual from a later time based on the assumption
of occupational identification. We need a German scholar on this one.
1286: Conrad Baumgartner listed in chronicles of German surnames,
Wurttemburgishes verkundenbuch. (The Historical Research Center.)
1385: Friedreich Baumgartner listed in Chronicles of German surnames,
Wurttemburgishes verkundenbuch. (The Historical Research Center.)
1520: 'Hans' Baumgartner born .( I believe this may be in error, I have
read that 'John' came to Switzerland from Muhlberg Germany about this
date. If he was of age he would have been born at the turn of the century.
(Note: This was the first known Baumgartner to appear in Switzerland.)
1547: The Battle of Muhlberg.
1548: Fridli Baumgatner born in Langnau, Switzerland. He was married
to Verena Mosiman his children were Barbara, Christian, Peter, Benedict,
Elspeth, Catharina, Barbel, Verena, Hans, and Peter. ( Perhaps one Peter
passed on earlier?)
1600: Peter Baummgartner born on 6 July. A note from the Book
of Descendants( Hereafter will be ( 'BoD' ) reads An Anabaptist living at Ibersheim,
Germany on January 1, 1672. His children were:' Hans',Verena and Anna.
1608: 'Fridli' Baumgartner dies at a farm near Langnau called
Dursrutti. He was the first recorded member of the Swiss Brethren
and his family was forced to relinquish their rights of inheritance.
1621: A list is made of five Anabaptist Baumgartners of the Emmental
Valley living in the commune of Langnau, three of them at Dursrutti
1629: Hans Baumgartner born on 8 March. He was married to Anna Haldiman who was born about 1629. Their children were Peter, Verena, Nicholas and Hans.
1629: Uli Baumgartner of Dursrutti a preacher of many years is
arrested and taken to Trachselwald and later Berne. He dies in the following
year.
1658: Peter Bumgartener born on September 2. He married Barbara Gerber
in 1677 in Trub Switzerland. Their children were: Anna, Hans, Elsbeth, Peter,
Christian, ( Who died.) and last another Hans.
1659: Two others of Uli's family are arrested and imprisoned. The song
'Dursruttilied', long sung by the Mennonites, tells their pathetic story.
1695: Hans Baumgartner born on 29, November. in Trub. He died in 1751 in Augusta, county, Virginia. He married Elisabeth Lewenberger His children
were John, Mary, Christian, Elizabeth and Madli. ( I have not stated the
birth years listed in the BoD. They are clearly estimations, as demostrated
in Johns's will of 1751 when both John and Christian were under age. ( Note:
Everyone has assumed, prior to the BoD information, that This Hans is one
of the Johns on later shipping lists. I offer this scenario: Peter and younger
his brother arrived before 1717 and are not listed on any later shipping
lists. The younger Christian is listed in 1729. The 'Peter' listed in
Rupp as being in PA in 1717 now has some validation. John was probably too
young to be listed. Peter and Hans would have been in the new world long
enough to have worked off their indenture and would have been an aid to Christian when he arrived much later. Somewhere in the Pennsylvania records there must be a clue but now we know where to look if my guess is correct.)
1715: Nicholas Bamgartner dies at Palermo, Italy in slavery. He had
been sent to Holland, but escaped at Mannheim, Germany and returned. He was
caught and sent to Italy as a galley slave. (Ref: BoD)
1715: John Baumgarten of Trub dies in the fortress of Turin after being
sentenced to the galleys at Sicily as a slave. (The source is: The European
Origins of the Brethren.) (Note: Before 1717 records of ship arrivals were
not required to be kept.)

1719: Peter Bumganer the older brother of Hans arrives some time before1717. There is no ships record but he is mentioned in Rupp's book.
1725: The Germania Colony of 1717 escapes to the Robinson River.
1729: Christian Bomgardner, Christopher Bumgardner arrives on ;Capt

indicates: First Platentines to arrive from 'der Phlatz'.( The "Flats," the
flat land of the Rhine river.) There were 180 passengers. At sea for
approximately one month. ÊWife's name was 'Ursley', ( Ursli a Swiss
diminutive for Ursula. A saints name according to the custom, probably born
in late October.) Christian signed his name with a 'cross' not an 'x'

revolutionary war. (That was the son of 'Hans' see 1751 entry.) The earlier
Christian last appears at Lancaster, Pa. in 1770 as an inmate in an Inn,
as recorded in the tax rolls.

page 50.)
1758: David Bumgardner born in May as per revolutionary war pension records.
1763: John Bumgardner's grant number 44 in Mecklenburg, N.C. of 150 acres
Followed on November the 16th of 1764 of an additional grant (number 291)
of 150 acres on a branch of Leeper's Creek from Henry Richards.(Note to Herb:This is our direct ancestor, He married a Nancy 'Bumgarner'. after the
revolution, who I believe was Nancy Ward, the daughter of a Col. Ward. She
was half Cherokee. Before the war it was illegal to formally marry an Indian.
I have recently heard of another name for her, Nancy Rocket, it may be some
kind of Indian name I don't know yet. You know we were always told we were
part Cherokee. So at long last the facts are slowly emerging. Also John was
listed as a Tory sympathiser and could have lost his property but his son
John served during the war and that probably saved him. I think he was mixed
up in the 'Regulator' business and was forced to take the 'King's Oath'.
Therefore he could not break it.)
