Deer Creek Falls, Grand Canyon, Arizona

I sketched this view in pastel/pencil and took photographs from above Deer Creek Falls: Mile 136 Colorado River in the Grand Canyon on one of my 1982 Colorado River rafting trips.
We all stopped for a day at Deer Creek Falls and was told of a old trail that led up to some indian ruins, so I hiked up and this outstanding view of the Grand Canyon. The view is looking east and you can make out the Arch in the Diabase Formation in the distance. I put in the Redwall Limestone slab for the goat petroglyphs. The actual Redwall Formation is about 5 to 8 miles north where a beautiful waterfall comes out at the formation base, called 'Fawn Falls'.
'Ancient Trails' was awarded First Place Oil Painting at the statewide Winslow, Arizona I-40 Expo Show in 1983.

Watching the late summer thunderheads loom in the distance reminded me of the days cutting wood west of Williams, Arizona. The sunflowered meadows signal that autumn is just around the corner. I added a little Arizona Chickadee on rusted barbed wire fence nailed to an old cedar juniper post.

It's great to see a sea turtle close to the beach on the North Shore
Tour buses stop at Lanikai in hopes for a sighting.
There was a special sea turtle named 'Honey Girl' who made her home on the North Shore.
Sadly I heard she was killed last year. The turtle in this painting represents her spirit riding with no fear the big North Shore waves.

I spent a great ten days on the North Shore and nights on the beach under a full moon watching and listening to the thunder and power of the big waves!
